In northern Italy, you will find the city of Milan, the second largest city in Italy and the center of economy and stock exchange of Italy. Milan is the capital of Lombardy and the Italian fashion world. Travelers flock to Milan to experience this metropolitan powerhouse, chic shopping, and some of the finest history in Italy.

Milan is unique from other cities in Italy for a few reasons. Firstly, its economy is not highly dependent on tourism and secondly, more rice is served in Milan than pasta and hardly any tomatoes are used in cooking. No tomatoes?!

After WWII much of Milan was lost but luckily for us some of its greatest attractions survived. What would Milan be without La Scala opera house or Castello Sforzesco, or The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci? We’re glad we only have to imagine that horror.

Some of the top attractions in Milan are as mentioned above, La Scala opera house, the red-brick Castello Sforzesco and Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. Other top attractions in Milan include the Milan Duomo, an elaborate cathedral located in Pizza del Duomo along with the Royal Palace of Milan and the Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery.

La Scala opera house, or Teatro alla Scala in Italian, is world renowned and one of the top attractions in Milan. Some of the finest artists of Italy have performed here. Inaugurated in 1778, La Scala is still considered one of the top opera houses in the world.

Another one of the great attractions in Milan can be found in Piazza Castello. Here you can visit the Castello Sforzesco. Today the palace, designed by Leonardo da Vinci, is a series of museums open to the public. Visitors can explore the castle grounds and the museums Tuesday through Sunday.

Part of the lure Milan has over travelers is its treasured painting, The Last Supper. This famous mural painting by Leonardo da Vinci is displayed at Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. Because of the popularity of this church, it is often suggested to buy tickets in advance.

The main square in Milan is the Piazza del Duomo where you will find many of the top attractions in Milan, such as the Royal Palace of Milan, the Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery and the Milan Duomo.

Aside from the sites, shopping stands as one of the top attractions of Milan for tourists and fashion lovers alike. Many major Italian fashion houses are based in Milan, including Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Miu Miu, Missoni, Armani and Versace. Some of the best shopping of Italy can be done in Milan. There are many streets in Milan popular solely for their great shopping, however the most famous shopping area in Milan is the Golden Quadrilateral, or Quadrilatero d'Oro. Four streets, Della Spiga. Via Montenapoleone, Della Spiga, Via Sant'Andrea and Via Borgospesso join together to collectively offer the most expensive, exclusive and high-fashion shopping in Italy
